Morning-after pill: no prescription after 18 years – consumers

“It is finally closed a chapter”. The gynecologist Silvio Viale, head of the Unified Service IVG (abortion) Ospedale Sant’Anna di Torino does not use the word “victory” to comment on the decision AIFA on the morning after pill: no recipe for those who more than 18 years. After 16 years of fighting the mood of Viale is that of someone who has done it.

in 2010 was sanctioned the Order of physicians

in 2010 Avenue (pictured above) he was also sanctioned by the Order of doctors to have prescribed since 2004 to women who so requested, in the streets and in front of schools and the NorLevo lonel (both based pills with levonorgestrel).

“Before the arrival, in 2000, of the specific drug NorLevo emergency contraception was done in clinics where they were given to women, without any prescription, birth control pills to higher doses of hormones,” recalls Viale.

For NorLevo instead was prescribed the obligation not repeatable recipe, why?
I did quickly notice the incongruity much more than in Europe this requirement was not there and also in the United States had been taken since the time of the Bush administration. An obligation that was based on prejudice, unfounded, that it was an abortifacient drug. In reality it is not at all because the World Health Organization itself made it clear that pregnancy begins when implantation of the embryo in the uterus and takes this pill acts much earlier: between intercourse and ovulation, delaying it. For this first assumes, the greater its effectiveness.

But it is a fact long known that the morning-after pill is not abortifacient …
In Italy officially only from 2011 when the Health Council has declared with certainty by dropping the old prejudice that NorLevo acted intercepting the fertilized egg.

Then what happened?
> That came the so-called pill five days later, Ella One, based ulipristal acetate. After a long procedural process and after years compared to other European countries, the end was also recorded in Italy, but with the requirement of a prescription and to present a pregnancy test. Nonsense not only coming in May.

Why Ella One of the prescription requirement fell before for NorLevo?
Simply because HRA Pharma , which distributes in Italy either one or the other, on the basis of the guidelines laid down by the European Agency of the drug in the first instance had applied only to AIFA for Ella one. Subsequently, the request was also made for NorLevo. Now it remains to “liberate” also lonel of Schering.

But the AIFA can proceed only at the request of the pharmaceutical company or on the initiative of others?

Ah is a question that I have left. For example with regard to the RU486, the so-called abortion pill, last July I and others Gynecologists of Sant’Anna with a letter we asked AIFA to extend to 63 days of pregnancy, instead of the current 49, the period within which a women may take this medicine. In the rest of Europe is already so well in the leaflet is an indication of the 63 days. We still have not had any response though.

The battle, therefore, continues to RU486?
Of course, the other objective is the abolition of hospitalization three days.

in some regions, such as Lazio, Liguria and Emilia-Romagna, it is already possible to administer the drug on an outpatient basis. Us to Sant’Anna we do also against the requirements of the Piedmont Region.
